April helping Uncle Scotty use the computer.

An extremely cute Easter bunny.

I love that the whole family likes games. Simultaneous Wits & Wagers and My First Carcassonne.

Cutest dinosaur ever (Seth).

Jemma and April.

The entire Jorna family together! This hasn’t happened in a long time. It made Pat (Scott’s dad) so happy. :’)

2. SPORTS

We went to a rugby union game. I learned all about weird things like BORING IN THE SCRUM.

Scott’s cousin hooked us up with ultra cheap tickets to the footy. The Hawks demolished the Cats. It’s one of my life goals to go to a full house AFL game at the MCG (100,000 people) (happens about a dozen times a season according to Scott), and this was close, but not quite. There were 72,000 people there, for a FIRST ROUND GAME! Melbournites love their sports.

Hawthorne cheer squad.

We even caught a Canada vs. Fiji Rugby Sevens game on TV, which made me laugh, and made Scott run to his room to put his jersey on. Canada was even winning for most of the game! But then Fiji smashed us. They seemed like they could run twice as fast as the Canadians.

3. AUSSIE FOODS

I ate 5 meat pies in 2 weeks. :D

We went out for dumplings, but they weren’t great. Should have researched a bit more about where is good these days.

At one of the spots on our impromptu pub crawl. We also went to a bar that was a little house right in the middle of the CBD, and Transport, and possibly somewhere else. Hmm.

Really expensive fancy margarita and really expensive piece of pork something. Too tipsy to remember the name of the restaurant. The pork was mega delicious though.

– we also ate lots of lamb, vanilla slices, parmas, flathead, Freddo Frogs, etc etc. And brought back an entire suitcase filled with Savoys, Tim Tams and BBQ Shapes.

Last week we went out to The Oakwood Canadian Bistro to try their Dine Out Vancouver menu. It’s in the $28 category.

The restaurant is in Kitsilano and definitely has a hipster vibe. The cocktails were kind of expensive and small, but they did have cheaper wine and beer pairings available.

Bacon and kombu dusted albacore tuna, miso eggplant puree, lime grapefruit gel, kimchi spiced kohlrabi, sesame snow.

Loved this. The miso eggplant puree was really interesting, the tuna was lovely and the kohlrabi was simply delicious. Everything tasted really nice in combination as well.

Smoked confit chicken, endive, celery and apple ribbons, pickled raisins, bacon vinaigrette.

This one was less exciting. Everything tasted good, and the apple ribbons were pretty, but it was just not as interesting as the tuna appy.

24 hour pork neck, bacon apple bbq sauce, popcorn grits, creamed spinach and smoked paprika scallion.

Very tender pork, buttery grits, and indulgent vegetables. Really nice dish.

Olive oil poached sable fish, smoked ham hock broth, confit leek, celeriac, potato croquette, creme fraiche, bacon crumb.

The vegetables and croquettes were good, but the star of the dish was the perfectly cooked fish.

Foreground: roasted apple, butterscotch, rhubarb grenadine gel, brown sugar oat flake. Background: pistachio cake, dark chocolate ganache, cranberry meringue, brown butter whipped cream.

I don’t like cooked fruit so I preferred the pistachio dessert more, although to be honest I couldn’t taste pistachio at all. It definitely tasted like almond extract instead. Scott says the apple one was “very nice” but could not come up with any other comments, haha.

All in all, a nice meal. I would return to the restaurant for their regular menu for sure, except I have to say… that KitchenAid mixer with a plant in it BETTER BE BROKEN. Otherwise they will have lost all of my respect. Ha!

Ferrero Rocher bubble tea. OM NOM NOM. 8 trillion grams of fat and sugar and deliciousness. This bubble tea is intense. I don’t even want to know how many Ferrero Rochers they use per drink… it must be a lot. There’s a whole one on top, plus whipped cream and pearls. The whole thing is ridiculous, and ridiculously good. It’s a good thing Bubble Queen is way out in Richmond otherwise I’d be tempted to get one way more often.

Don’t worry about the line out the door, they are very efficient and you shouldn’t have to wait too long.

Southern Crab Cake Benny – crab cakes, avocado, hollandaise, home fries

Pulled Beef Brisket Hash – beef brisket, black beans, chile verde, home fries, poached eggs

We went to Chewies for brunch a couple weeks ago. Both dishes were rich, indulgent, tasty. But it’s no Screen Door. If we had gone to Chewies first, and then Screen Door, everything would be fine. But nope, Southern-style brunch has been ruined for us. Nothing will top that amazing brunch we had in Portland.

One of the best things about the food blogging conference I went to was the food. So many yummy meals, and no one judging you for taking pictures of your plate, haha.

The first dinner was put on by the Dairy Farmers of Canada.

First course, four cheese truffled macaroni with a lentil crumble. Deliciously cheesy with an earthy flavour. The lentils were crunchy, but with an odd texture between your teeth.

Main course, roasted salmon with lentil & bacon vinaigrette, ricotta gnocchi, caramelized cauliflower. Loved the (sustainable as per Ned Bell) salmon and the gnocchi.

Dessert, red wine pear & hazelnut financier, salted caramel sauce, toasted wild rice ice cream. This was SUPER YUMMY. The little cake was moist and sweet, with slightly sour cherries (wait did they switch the pear for cherries? not sure) and salty caramel to balance. And the ice cream was totally smooth and creamy and sweet with a hint of rice flavour. Nom nom nom.

Whole Foods breakfast. A Japanese breakfast burrito that had smoked trout, eggs, mushrooms, sticky rice, nori, kale seaweed salad, red curry mayo all in a tortilla. Fruit salad that was sweet and SPICY. I loved the burrito! I have never eaten a breakfast wrap like it before. I heard from other people that they didn’t really like this breakfast, but I thought it was super unique and good.

Morning snack break with treats from Butter. After 4 weeks of not eating any sugar, this tasted incredible. The brownie was super rich and the “Oreo” was awesome. I got a copy of the Butter cookbook in my swag bag and when I’m back on sugar I am totally trying these recipes first. So decadent.

We had a make-your-own-sandwich bar for lunch but nothing too crazy so I’ll skip it.

Dinner on the second night from Mushrooms Canada and Ontario Beef.

First course was a beef cheek & portabella ravioli in a Samuel Adams beer consommé. I always giggle when they make single ravioli dishes on Masterchef so I was pretty amused to finally get to eat one in real life. And they always go on and on and on about consommé being perfectly clear on TV too, haha. Anyway it was nice. I am not a beer drinker, and I could taste it in the soup, but it was still lovely. And perfectly clear.

Main course, the star of the entire conference imo, roasted beef with shortrib & mushroom gratin, lentils, caramelized celery roots & hearts. I knew the beef was going to be good when I realized there were no sharp knives on the table. This beef was so tender you could pull it apart with your fork. So nice. The gratin was also rich and savoury and crispy and soft. Everything else was fine, but I definitely gave the beef and gratin priority.

Dessert, coffee chocolate float with a marshmallow top, preserved cherries, lentil cookie. A lot of people loved this, but I can’t drink coffee so I only tasted bits and pieces. I did like the cherries I dug out of the jar, and the cookie.

Next morning we had an omelette bar for breakfast from the Burnbrae Farms but I forgot to take a picture.

Morning snack, mini doughnuts from Cartems Donuterie. Everyone was losing their head over how cute they were. They looked good but I found them overly oily.

The last day we got to order food from Foodee for lunch. I had a Tacofino chicken karaage burrito, with chicken karaage (duh), rice, cabbage, avocado, and more. Loved it. It had tons of chicken in it and lots of flavour.

So much swag! They sent us home with tons of things from all the sponsors including two full cookbooks, glass containers, egg cooking thingies, a portable cell phone charger, granola, and lots more all in a sweet insulated cooler bag. I was very impressed with the swag bag!! Plus I think there are still a few more things on the way.

Other great things about the conference:

  • really useful seminars about the ethics of blogging, finding your niche, increasing traffic, etc etc.
  • meeting tons of other food bloggers from here in Vancouver and all over Canada
  • copious amounts of wine

So glad I decided (last minute) to go.
