Scott and I redeemed our vaneats.ca DD Mau voucher the other night. The package came with two half banh mi sandwiches (one grilled lemongrass chicken, and one crispy roasted pork) and a smoothie (we chose avocado) for $9.50.

The sandwiches were really really good. All the fresh veggies tasted great and the bread was crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. The crispy pork one was definitely the best, but the chicken was still good too!

(By the way, if you haven’t tried banh mi sandwiches yet, you should! They’re Vietnamese. They typically have cucumber, pickled carrots and daikon, mayo, cilantro, some type of meat, and hot sauce on them. DELICIOUS).

The smoothie was good also. It was made with avocado and almond milk. The avocado taste wasn’t super strong. I liked it much better than the time Scott and I tried to make avocado smoothies at home.

It was a great meal. The package was enough for two people to split for lunch, or one hungry person for dinner!

I will totally go back to DD Mau sometime. I want to try their BBQ duck banh mi, and I would totally order the crispy pork banh mi again. YUM!

It’s flipping cold out!!!! Time to crank up the thermostat I think!

It’s my last week at my fall hospital placement. My placement went fine I guess but I didn’t really start to feel comfortable until this last rotation. Hopefully they are pleased with me overall. I don’t know how good my chances are to get a job there though when just last week the boss lady asked me what my name was. :/

(I have been told not to take that personally because she is bad with names, BUT STILL. Yikes for me.)

I had a good weekend. On Saturday I did homework and streamed the world cup skeleton races at Whistler on the TV at the same time. Then Scott and I went out for banh mi. It was delicious, I’ll post a review in another entry soon. We came home and Scott had to do work stuff until after midnight!!!

I was quite busy on Sunday. I got up early to make muffins and then take the bus to IKEA to get something for a Christmas present. Then I met Scott at Metrotown so we could pick out some winter boots.

Neither of us have any waterproof footwear so we decided to invest in a good pair of winter boots once and for all. Atmosphere was having a BOGO sale for Black Friday so that was good for us. We both chose North Face hiking boots. I love mine, they are so warm and cozy! Scott’s have wifi. I am glad to finally have the right type of footwear to wear to Whistler, last time I wore sneakers and had wet socks the entire weekend.

Anyway then I came home and had lunch and did more homework and made cookies and then made dinner (mac and cheese with butternut squash. caramelized onions, apples, and bacon AKA PRETTY MUCH THE BEST DINNER I KNOW HOW TO MAKE). We finished off the day with Amazing Race and then I went to bed at 9PM because I am a grandma I have to wake up at 5:30 AM for work.

Well that’s me all caught up. Scott leaves for Australia in 5 days. Have I mentioned that Rosemarie is meeting him in Melbourne for a week??!! I soooo wish I could be there, but I’m really glad that she will get to meet some of my Aussie family. And Scott has orders to take her to all my favourite Melbourne places!

Scott will be gone pretty much the entire time that I have to be studying hardcore and writing lots of exams. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing yet. I’d better go buy some frozen pizzas….

We ate this a while ago but it was too good not to mention. Long weekend brunch at Red Wagon on Hastings @ Nanaimo.

On the left is my Crisp Pork Belly breakfast with delicious pork belly (under the garnish), poached eggs, hollandaise, grilled tomato, potatoes and toast. Oh I’m drooling again.

And on the right is Scott’s Pulled Pork Pancakes. In between each of the pancakes was pulled pork, and the syrup over it was Jack Daniel’s flavoured. It tasted great! Love that sweet salty combo.

We were both super happy with our meals. We had to wait a while for a table but it was totally worth it.

Whistler was funnnnnnn. When we got there on Saturday morning Ivo told me I would be starting from Junior start right away. I was like this —> O_O but it ended up being really good and I had great runs. My top speed was 119 km/hr!!

The only problem with Junior start is that the forces are a lot stronger on the last corner and it’s hard to hold my head up sometimes. My neck strength is what limited me, so after a few runs each day I moved back down to Maple Leaf start again instead. It’s funny how slowwwww Maple Leaf seems now. Ivo showed me some exercises I can do for my neck so I’ve been doing that to get stronger. That will probably help me on all those fast roller coasters at Magic Mountain as well. :D

I didn’t take any pictures over the weekend. Bad blogger.

Here is one I stole from Janina:

rebecca and i

(Funny story: I spent the whole weekend with Janina, who is from Germany, without realizing that 1. SHE WENT TO BELL H.S. FOR A YEAR. and 2. SHE KNOWS MY SISTER FROM OTTAWA. We didn’t figure that out until I got home and Rosemarie asked me her usual question of ‘who from SFU was there’. Anyway, what the heck!!!!!???!!! The world is a small small place.)

I actually drove up to Whistler myself this time. Scott stayed home in Vancouver. I was way more worried about driving then I was about skeletoning(!), but it was totally fine. It was raining, but it wasn’t too cold so there wasn’t any ice on the roads. Whew!! I was driving a bunch of kids from the SFU skeleton club. They all fell asleep on the way there so I guess they trusted me.

And I stayed with Brian and Morgan again. It is so awesome that they live there!!!!

I wish I was in Whistler right now. Blackcomb got almost a metre of snow and is opening early tomorrow with tons of powder expected. Also there is a big bobsleigh and skeleton competition going on which would be pretty awesome to watch. Dang you school and lack of money!!!

We had our nerd convention scholarship awards ceremony this week. It was just a short ceremony with a photographer and some snacks. I thought it was cool though that a lot of the awards were given out by the person that started the award. Mine was from Brenda Clark, who used to teach at BCIT! She was lovely.

the whole nuclear medicine group

i look like a giant!

pls get me off this stage

The MC majorly messed up my part. First she called me Katarina Joma. Then she got the presenter name wrong. Then she got my name wrong. Finally on the 4th try she got everything right. The whole time we were just awkwardly standing on the stage. AH! Everyone laughed though. I was the only one she messed up!!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So all week long there have been rumours about all sorts of strikes at school. Actually one union did go on strike one day but only in one building and we weren’t affected at all. I must have checked the BREAKING NEWS page on the BCIT website about 400 times in the last week. I just wanted ONE DAY OFF!! That’s all!!

Anyway they finally got organized and now they’re striking on Monday. AKA my first day back at clinical. WAHHHH.

BUT, apparently the hospitals had a strike vote today as well, so maybe I will get my one day off after all. We shall see.

Buying Fiji flights has been temporarily delayed until I find out if the strikes are going to mess with our schedules at all. Fingers crossed that the strikes don’t end up being very disruptive.

I JUST WANT THAT ONE DAY OFF!!!

In other news we went to the second hand sports store to get new snowboard bindings for Scott, and we also happened to find a helmet that actually fits Scott’s giant head for $50. Woot. I think he has all the gear now.

I’m off to Whistler again tomorrow morning for more skeleton. The mountain is actually opening tomorrow, but I’m not bringing my skis this time. I’d rather save my ski day for a day when more of the runs are open. I’m super pumped for skeleton of course though!!
